Read 2 Peter 1:5-9
Steady as You Go
We all know the allegory about the turtle and the hare, how the turtle won the race slow and easy. You may be surprised that the same can be said for the mature Christian. Our text talks about growing in our faith by adding each Christian virtue one at a time. So, the question could be, “How do I do this?” Well it begins by walking in the disciplines of the Christian faith. Here are some of those on the list.
Daily prayer: Make time to talk to God the Father and time to listen to what His sweet Holy Spirit says to you in a still small voice. This includes adoration (praise) confession, thankfulness and supplication (asking for needs for yourself and others). Luke 6:12
Reading God’s Word, meditating on what you read, and memorization of verses: While you are doing this ask the Holy Spirit to show you how it applies to your life then go and do it! Psalms119:11
Know and use your gifts: All of us who have become children of God have been given gifts to be used for His service. Ask other Christians what gifts they see in you; develop them and use them for the good of the Body of Christ. I Corinthians 12:4-27
Corporate worship: We do not live the Christian life on an island. God calls us a “Family” and we are to come together to worship Him in spirit and in truth. Be in regular worship, hearing of the Word, and to be encouraged by your brothers and sisters in Christ. Hebrews 10:25
Fasting: Although few do this on a regular basis fasting completely or partially allows you to pray continually and to concentrate on what God is saying to you through His word and in prayer. Through fasting you will receive God’s direction for your life.
As we consistently walk in these ways we will experience all of the “add-ons” to our faith: goodness, knowledge, self-control, perseverance, godliness, brotherly kindness, and love. How about recommitting our lives anew this Lenten season to the Lord to be “steady as you go” in our walk with Christ. As it says in II Timothy 4:7 “I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.” May it be so, my church family; I am praying for you.
Lord, we ask You to help us grow in the practice of our Christian walk. We pray for endurance and to be steady in the race we run for You.
